    How to Dialogue on the "Tough Stuff" (Part 1)

    A great tragedy is seeing good people flounder because they are not told about the “growing edges” that are holding them back. This interactive session will support participants in exploring ways to hold unencumbered dialogues with individuals. Participants will practice dialogues that “set the table” for learning, growth and accountability to occur.

    Vulnerable Persons Act-Substitute Decision-Making Information and Ethical Considerations

    Dr. Lennox will be sharing the research behind the development of CHAP’s and share strategies for use and implementation.  This session will give medical practitioners, support workers and families a tool to ensure excellent health care for people living with intellectual, developmental disabilities and autism.

    Learning From Centre: Personal Resilience (Part 2)

    Speaker:

    Every individual comes equipped with four basic ways of “showing up” in the world. These include the Thinker, the Visionary, the Lover, and the Doer. Every team, business, community, family needs members who are analytical, inspirational, relational, and practical. The challenge is that most of us – including leaders – have one or two “home ports” (i.e. strength areas) and one or two “deflated” parts (areas that are weaker). But there is good news! We can learn to show up in ways that are needed – to think, to dream, to connect, and to roll up our sleeves and get doing when practical action is required. That’s what this workshop is all about.

    Facilitating Dialogue To Promote Equity And Inclusion: A Workshop About Workshops (Part 2)

    Speaker:

    Health equity exists when all members of our community have the opportunity to be healthy. Promoting health equity requires innovation and challenging the status quo within our own organizations. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Population and Public Health team held a staff development half-day session to creatively engage staff in a dialogue about taking action to promote health equity. In this session, facilitators will guide participants through a mini-workshop about WRHA’s process and how it could be adapted for other groups.

    Participants will examine presentation slides about key health equity and inclusion concepts, discuss facilitation techniques, and review other materials used to support the development and implementation of health equity workshops (facilitator’s guides; evaluation forms). Using an innovative format of “workshopping a workshop” participants will engage in dialogue about building workforce capacity to promote health equity.

    Health Promotion Knowledge of Support Workers

    The main aim of the study was to gain a greater understanding of the current health promotion practices of those people who support people with intellectual disabilities in three agencies in Manitoba.

    What's your Story? (Part 2)

    Speaker:

    Why is storytelling important and how can it inspire change? In this session you will learn the art of storytelling – specifically how to tell your own story, why it’s important, and how it can motivate others. Storytelling connects us to our humanity. It links us to our past, our present and can even shape our future. Since the early beginnings, humans have told stories as a way to shape our existence. Compelling storytellers captivate our attention by engaging both our head and heart – connecting us to our values, igniting our emotions and leading us to take action.

    Supporting People with Disabilities to Experience the Benefits of Yoga (Part 2)

    Speaker:

    Gail will be demonstrating how to assist people to access yoga. This session will explore the many benefits of yoga to people that have disabilities and special needs in their practice. Participants In this session will be provided with hands on strategies to help bring the experience of yoga to children and adults that may require supports.

    Ethical Challenges in Managing Complex Medical Care (Part 2)

    Speaker:

    As care-providers to medically challenging individuals and groups, we are often met with ethical issues that test our own code of ethics and morals.  Dr Lennox will discuss some of the ethical challenges that we meet regularly in complex medical care and illustrate his discussion with cases and personal stories to help support the discussion.

    Autism: Assessing and Teaching Perspective Taking Skills to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

    Speaker: St.Amant Autism Program

    Presenters will discuss past research regarding perspective-taking ability, as well as the apparent deficit of this skill in children with ASD. Implications of this deficit on the social encounters of children with ASD will be considered. Most importantly, teaching techniques that may help children to acquire perspective-taking ability will be explored. These techniques include narrative response training and video-modelling.

    Introduction to Attachment Theory and Practice

    Speaker:

    Attachment Theory helps us understand “why people do what they do”, and is based on infant strategies for protection and survival. Every human being requires a secure base from which to become an individual, learn about the environment and learn about the multitude of feelings we are equipped with, and how to manage them. Healthy attachment promotes adaptive responses to their experiences. When children do not experience a secure attachment with their parent or caregiver, they develop patterns of avoidant or reactive behaviours. Attachment strategies or behaviour patterns develop throughout the lifespan. Through therapeutic intervention, individuals can learn to become more secure and balanced in their responses to daily experiences.

    1. Gain an understanding of the nature and definition of Attachment Theory.
    2. Understand the ramification for people when attachment is  not attained.

    An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Feeding Problems in Developmental Disabilities

    Speaker: St. Amant Clinical Team

    This session will consist of abbreviated material from a half day workshop available through St.Amant called “Eat Your Peas: Feeding Problems and Developmental Disabilities”. The presenters will review some of the issues faced by caregivers and families of individuals with developmental disabilities who present with problem eating behaviours. Using the perspective of an interdisciplinary treatment team, attendees will learn how to distinguish between “picky eating” versus “problem eating” behaviours, as well as how to set realistic goals for change. General recommendations will be reviewed and a table of resources will be available.

    Home Care Nursing in Winnipeg: Past, Present , and Future Directions

    Speaker:

    Reflecting on the rich history and impact of home care nurses to the health of Manitobans, this presentation will discuss current and future directions within the WRHA Home Care Nursing Program. New approaches to nursing care service delivery and evidence informed practice models will be highlighted.

    The Experience of Women with Disabilities in The North

    Speaker:

    We know little about the lives of women who live with disabilities in Canada’s North. This presentation shares some stories from women with disabilities in northern Manitoba and Labrador communities. The women identified strengths of, and barriers to, living with disabilities in the North. There is no common understanding of disability in Northern communities, often because of Indigenous ways of knowing or inclusive practices in communities. Historically, governments removed people with disabilities from northern communities and then sent to southern centres or institutions, instead of providing adequate government funding and support for local and community-based services and supports in Northern Canada. As a result children and adults with disabilities from the North are a part of southern cities and separate from their northern communities and cultures.

    Aging Persons With Intellectual Disability And Dementia In Manitoba

    This session provides a brief overview of the study that was conducted to describe the aging persons with intellectual disability and dementia in Manitoba. Results of the study will be presented and discussed.

    1.   Data based approach to estimate diagnostic prevalence of dementia for adults in Manitoba without ID and Manitoba adults with ID
    2.   Examine the prevalence of early onset dementia in people with intellectual disabilities

    An individual you support in a supported independent living environment walks into a bank to withdraw $750. The bank teller, looking concerned, asks her a number of questions, including “what are you going to use that money for?” The answer is “the casino”. The teller does not want to release the funds. What do you do?

    Palliative Care in Developmental Disabilities

    Speaker:

    As the population of individuals with intellectual disabilities ages, palliative care is an emerging area of concern with unique collaborations and a mindset that differs greatly from typical approaches in this field. This session will highlight some of the key concepts in palliative care and provide added detail for practical application of the knowledge in addressing the unique needs of people with intellectual disabilities in end-of-life experiences.

    Collaborative Care: Partnering Across The Continuum Of Care

    Mounting research evidence links interprofessional collaborative care to improved client outcomes, enhanced client safety, increased client/health provider satisfaction with care and increased health system efficiency. Using case studies and client stories, this presentation will highlight key enablers and lessons learned in promoting effective teamwork and collaboration within community settings.

    Disability Matters Vote 2016 Campaign

    The Disability Matters: Vote 2016 initiative was led by Abilities Manitoba and Barrier-Free Manitoba with the goal of ensuring Manitobans were aware of and involved in the voting process and bring priority attention to disability issues. This session will discuss the initiative and its challenges and success. Abilities Manitoba, a network of agencies, exists to foster excellence in services for people with intellectual disabilities.

    Animal Therapy vs Having a Pet - Considerations

    Speaker:

    You are the principal of a community school. One day, a new student joins the school – one who presents with severe challenging behaviour and requires intensive supports to succeed in a school environment.  No additional financial or staffing resources are available at the time the student enters the school. As principal, you choose to reallocate resources in order to meet the needs of the student. The next morning, you receive multiple calls and visits from parents who are angry and accuse you of “shortchanging” their children. What do you do?
